When J B Whitworth was firmly in charge he employed Frank George, a young man of just 17, as a Flour Mill Trainee. George left the company in 1912 for a post in St Albans, but agreed to return as manager of the mill in 1922.

During the first 50 years, the Whitworth brothers concentrated on supplying sacks of flour to local bakers.
