John Battams Whitworth requested planning permission to build a flour mill on the River Nene at Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. On 29th May 1886, the granted planning permission was published in the local newspaper, and work commenced that autumn. Milling started the following year, with the three Whitworth brothers - John, Herbert and Newton - trading under the name of Whitworth Bros.

Ponies were also stabled at the Mill so that the product could be delivered directly from the premises.
